Noelle goes to France to replenish her inventory of antique furniture.Īfter Noelle leaves for France, Bruce goes to Mercer’s cottage ostensibly to discuss some books that Mercer wanted to sell him, but in truth, Bruce brings a bottle of champagne hoping to get Mercer in bed. Noelle gets a surprise visit from some antique buyers who purchase most of her inventory. They get to know each other better, giving Mercer the opportunity to spy more intently on Bruce.īruce, meanwhile has contacted Denny, the thief, and purchased all five of the manuscripts for $1 million. ![]() While Denny is proposing the sale of his manuscripts to Bruce, Mercer is feeding info to the insurance company, writing her book and getting to know the neighbors on Camino Island.īruce and Noelle invite Mercer to dinner. They develop a romantic relationship despite Bruce’s marriage to Noelle, a New Orleans antique dealer. She agrees to pose on the island as a writer working on her newest novel while she collects information about Bruce Cable’s involvement in the Princeton heist.īruce and Mercer hit it off. Mercer is ideal to serve as an undercover agent on the island and get to know Bruce Cable and his potential involvement in fencing the stolen manuscripts.Īt 32 years old, Mercer is attractive and a good novelist, even though she has not hit the big time. Elaine recruits Mercer Mann who once spent summers on Camino Island with her grandmother and is a novelist without a real job. They send out their chief investigator, Elaine Shelby, to find the books or to mitigate their loss. ![]() The insurance company now owes Princeton University $25 million for their loss, but they do not intend to accept this loss lying down. Meanwhile, Denny hides the documents and begins to look for a buyer.īruce Cable is a legitimate bookstore operator in Santa Rosa, Florida on Camino Island, but he also collects rare books and is suspected by the FBI of being a buyer of stolen books. The FBI finds the bloodstain and with DNA research soon capture two of the five team members and put them in jail. The thieves escape from the Princeton Library but one of the team is hit by a bullet and he leaves a drop of blood on the library steps. The rare books are priceless to Princeton, but they are insured for $25 million.ĭenny’s team flawlessly executes their plan and escapes with the five manuscripts including the greatest prize, the handwritten original manuscript of The Great Gatsby by F.
