Change that too. ![]() As you type, other soft noises can be heard echoing your keystrokes, and your thoughts are free to flow from thoughts to pixels.ĭon’t like the music? Change it. When you load up Ommwriter (use headphones, people), serene music begins softly playing, and an unobtrusive animated background gives way to your typing cursor. Ommwriter is an immersive writing experience, and just last week it received a few upgrades that make it slightly better than before. This isn’t a text editor that you keep running in the background while you continue to check email, post updates to Facebook and Twitter, or even read the news. That’s the theory behind Ommwriter, a word processing application for Mac OS X (10.5 or higher) that transforms your computer into an ambient writing environment where you are free and alone with your thoughts. It’s a great way of fighting off the stress of our busy lives, so any way you can work in a little peace and quiet is a valuable resource these days. TXT formats using the "Save" bubble. What does that sound remind you of? If you pictured sitting cross-legged, hands at either side with middle fingers and thumbs connected, you’re on the right track. So, yes, you can tweak Dana II and your documents to some degree, but it's best to write elsewhere should you need to apply major formatting like bullet points, hyperlinks, and footers. You can use them to change the font, text size, visual theme, background music, keyboard sound effects, and initiate the "Save As" options. Once you're satisfied with the text box size, you begin writing as you would in any other app, but without the options of headers, footers, and other features you'd associate with word processing apps.Ī column of vertically aligned option bubbles resides to the right of the text area. The writing area is small by default, but you can expand the space by dragging Dana II's borders. It surpasses FocusWriter in this regard, an app with a far less elegant interface. That work-ready feeling was bolstered by the incredibly clean interface and soft, ambient background music that also created a calming environment. The blackout really helps keep you focused on the task at hand. ![]() This is a feature that FocusWriter lacks, which is unfortunate. Dana II has another neat trick: it automatically blacks out the second display in dual monitor setups. That alone motivated me to focus on the writing task at hand, as I couldn't peek at an email client or other possible attention-grabbing apps. You can't reduce its size to dabble in other things. OmmWriter Dana II achieves its distraction-free goal in part by operating exclusively in full-screen mode-either you're in the app or out of the app. Dana II lacks many features found in Microsoft Word ($149.00 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window), Apple iWork's Pages, or the rival FocusWriter, but its streamlined interface and simplicity make it a worthy download for those who need to put their thoughts onto the digital page without all of the extra (and potentially distracting) bells and whistles. The distraction-free tool (also available on Windows PCs) creates a calm, peace-filled writing environment using audio-visual techniques. That's where an app like the $4.11 OmmWriter Dana II proves useful. On the other hand, that same freedom can be a tremendous distraction when it's time to get some writing done.
